Higbee, Gray, and Torres started the event and ran all the way down the Gulf of California side of the peninsula. Cecco and Buckhannon fought fueling problems in the second half of the race, but still brought it home second. The finish sets a good foundation for a full-on assault on the SCORE championship in 2019.
“We had a pretty decent run and all of the riders put in a lot of miles,” said Higbee. “It sets the tone for next year and lets them know that we’re still there. We’ll be at all four SCORE races next year on the Can-Am Outlander 1000R and we look forward to getting that #1a plate.”
The Baja 1000 is likely the most grueling endurance racing event on the calendar. Higbee and his professional team of riders were backed up by an equally professional support team.
“We have a great program and everyone worked really hard,” said Higbee. “Chris Robinson drove our main chase truck. Jose Torres’ group with Jeremy Gray drove the Gulf of California side.”
The Baja 1000 is more of an event than just a race. Local spectators welcomed the riders to their country and encouraged them throughout the event. Higbee enjoys the international feel of the race.
“It’s a very festive atmosphere,” explained Higbee. “The local people come out in the tens of thousands to watch. There is nothing like riding 80 mph down a gravel chute and have 5,000 people lined up on each side of it. We are privileged to come down to their great country and be able to compete on some of the best terrain.”
The event was the season finale for the SCORE Series, but Higbee’s team will return next season. Higbee will be joined in 2019 by Cecco, Gray, Torres and Cody Mitchell. The team will also fill in with top local riders as needed.
The SCORE Series kicks off the 2019 calendar of racing during the 33rd Annual San Felipe 250 in Mexico April 3-7.
